“Particularly cherished”... Sounds good. Is this what “cherished” has become?
This isn’t to say that housing animals as companions is wrong, as long as the
“Pet” as defined still exists for you.
Adoption
is the key
Companion animals are friends for life, and should be treated as any other family member should be.
They are what you raise them to be. There is always a fix to clawing furniture, accidents on the carpet, barking, biting, and chewing.  It starts with you.

Imagine the horrid nature a human child would aspire to if it was not for the love and understanding of a good parent. The same goes for them.
Training should not require yelling, hitting, and choking. Shock collars and other inhumane ‘training’ devices do nothing but cause fear and pain.

A child that grows up in a bad and abusive home loathes their parents, threatens their own safety, escapes as quickly as possible, and defies their family and friends at each chance.

Raise an animal companion like you want them to stay forever and love you unconditionally. Raise them without fear and deviance but with love and soothing lessons.
